Nematodes for control of Sciarids

Nematodes are microscopic worms, occurring naturally in soil, attacking the larvae of Sciarids. In length they are about 1 mm.white/clear in appearance. The product is delivered as infective larvae in 3. stage in a formulation of clay. The Nematode Steinernema feltiae primarily eat the larvae of Sciarids. It carries naturally occurring bacteria, which is released in the Sciarid-larvae after infection has happened. The bacteria release some toxins, which kills the larvae in few days. Dead Sciarid-larvae change colour to yellow/white and becomes slimy.

How to use
Nematodes can be used alone, or in combination with other beneficials as Hypoaspis-mites and Bacillus thuringiensis (Dipel or Biobit). It is also possible to combine the biological control of Sciarid-larvae with chemical control of adult flying Sciarids and sticky traps. Steinernema feltiae is used preventive in dosage of 500.000 (½ million)/m2. It is recommended to treat again after 3-4 weeks or depending of infestation. Curative use in a dosage of 500.000 (½ million)/m2, but the treatment must be done after one week and so to continue until infestation is controlled. It is very important that the soil is wetted minimum 1 week after treatment as the nematodes are very susceptible for drying out. Nematodes can be mixed with water and watered out directly, or applicated through the automatically equipment in the nursery. Filters with diameter below 0,5 mm has to be removed, and the pressure must not exceed 5 bar. Soil temperature optimal between 13 and 25 degrees Celsius. Continued mixing of the nematode solution is necessary, as the nematodes slowly will sink to the bottom after ½ hour.
