Stapleflyes
The biological control of flies in staples is dependent of wet or dry conditions. In pigstaples or cowstaples with liquid manure the optimal control is by use of the black dump fly (Ophyra) . The stapleflyparasitoid has to be used where the pigs or cows grow in straw material (dry conditions). In mink or chickenfarms Nasonia can be used. A good hygiene in the staple is a prerequisite for a good biological control
Stapleflyparasitoid (Nasonia vitripennis)
Attacks and parasitizes pupae of the staplefly Musca domestica. The Product contains the parasitoid in the pupaestage, which is protected in pupae of Musca. Some adult hatched parasitoids are often seen in the product. The Product is mixed with sawdust. Often the hatching has started, when the product arrives to the farmer. The recommended use is one bottle with 20.000 Nasonia per 100 m2 (pigstaple) or per. 10 calves or 50 cows. The Bottle with the Nasonia is placed in the staple away from direct sunlight, and opened so the parasites can start flying out after hatching from the pupae. The development of Nasonia from egg till adult is around 3weeks at 20 degrees Celsius, and only 2 weeks at 25 degrees Celsius. The optimal control of flies will come through if parasitoids are released every 2-3 weeks in the summertime, at least 6 releases.
The Black dump fly (Ophyra aenescens)
The larvae stage of the predatory fly "the black dump fly" attacks The Musca larvae in the liquid manure. The Product is a mix of larvae and pupae. The product is mixed with sawdust. The recommended use is one bag (e.g. 15.000 black dump flies) for 15 calves or 50 adult cows, or 100 m2 pigstaple. The bags are to be hung in the staples away from sunshine, and a hole is cut to in the top to let the adult flies escape. The development from egg to adult is around 2 weeks at 20 degrees Celsius. The optimal control is obtained by introducing Ophyra every two weeks in minimum 6 weeks and until there is a biological balance between Musca and Black dump fly. To be used year round. To avoid a crash in the biological balance when obtained, do leave a thin layer of manure when emptying the tank. (e.g. 10 - 20 centimetre.) This allows the larvae of the black dump fly to survive in the staples when first established. |
